I think Ashley has done something brilliant ... she's done what most self-educated business people rarely know how to do. She has used all of her available resources to make her project as successful as possible. She may have gotten this lesson from BCIT, but I suspect that she got it from John Chow. And good for her! John Chow happens to be one of her available resources (I wish I had such a good resource and many of the whiners are likely just jealous that they don't).
If there were no restrictions within the contest rules about how the video was allowed to be publicized for voting purposes then all of you whining about how well she managed to do that need to just zip it! And for the record, I didn't find out about the contest via John Chow's mailing list so those of you claiming "spam" need to give your head a shake. John Chow put the link on his blog and on Twitter and it was re-tweeted by many people ... it was good old fashioned viral marketing! I suspect that those complaining about the use of Twitter for this purpose don't actually understand how Twitter works ... it goes beyond John's email list (which is opted in so not spam in the first place).

Some people in here are lacking in the knowledge department - I thought this was a contest held by a university?
What John did is not spam, at all. He has a list of 40-50k double opt-ins. For those of you who don't know what that means: 40k+ people signed up to receive his emails, and then after getting an email confirmed that they wanted to get them again. They said twice they want this mail!
And at the bottom of each email they have an option to stop subscribing. So how can you call this spam?
John simply asked his friends if they would vote for his daughter. This is no different than when you were doing a fundraiser in elementary school and asked your mom/dad to bring it in to their work and ask their coworkers.
By a lot of the logic used here; if your team shared or asked people on facebook/twitter/their blog/email to vote - those votes shouldn't count and you should be disqualified.
And really, how many people in here still have a working brain? "the school should kick all of you out"? I'd call you a retard but that wouldn't be fair to actual people with mental disabilities.

There is nothing right or wrong about it. Ideally the university should've done this polling in their intranet site. It is impossible for them now to separate the wheat from the chaff. The people who got 100,200,300 or 400 comments. Do you think, they were fair in getting those. Everybody must have done the viral marketing but the best will win. There is nothing wrong here. Microsoft had killed all the competition as they moved to the top, would you stop using a Windows PC now citing ethics? Adobe, Apple, Google are no less guilty and use their might everytime, everywhere to kill competition. The fact is when you put anything live on internet for comments, you shouldn't complain about it but rather learn from the experience.
My best wishes to Ashley, Heather, Robert, Nailia, Marc, Julia... May the smartest win.

The funny thing for a lot of people who voted based on John Chow's offer is that unless they actually post a comment, AND he knows who they are, they can't win. The voting process is anonymous and I highly doubt that BCIT is going to give out the email or IP addresses of those who voted for this. Wouldn't it be ironic if in the end he had no way of verifying who the people were who voted based on his solicitation and he ended up keeping the computer for himself?

You don't need to spam people with e-mails or post on your stupid Twitter page to garner votes. Its a simple thing since the beginning of time called friends. You should make some. Also anothing thing called word of mouth. You get your friends to vote and your friends of your friends vote. Things get done. Idiot
Carl Nelson said...

So if the entrants want to promote their video is considered a "bribe" what do you call the prize in the first place? Is BCIT "bribing" students to make promotional videos for them, garnering thousands of hits on this website and promoting the contest management site?
Evil!
What I want to know is how the OTHER top two videos are getting so many votes, without being mentioned on large email lists or Twitter...
Cheaters said...
Posted 2 years 29 weeks ago
Actually Jeff there is a big difference. When your parents sell your school fundraisers to coworkers you are not directly competing against someone else. Also with what Ben said.. sending out thousands of emails to strangers that know nothing about this constitutes as spam. It is not clever marketing. If there is even one person that got this e-mail and see this as spam your image has been tarnished.
To "Dr Jim Sellner". Seriously? You signed up on this site and under name you put in that your a doctor and that you have a PhD? Either you are a retard or that is fake and you are just trying to give fake credibility to this video.
Everyone knew this was going to a popularity contest.. but this video has broken that line. Bribing people to vote and spamming.
I hope 3 Blog Nights shuts this video down. Sunnys video and Wilkins video has been around since the beginning and does not surprise me that they have garnered a realistic amount of votes in a realistic amount of time. Those two deserve to win fairly. Also BCIT MAN is getting ousted to a third place finish to these cheaters.

Hi,
Fascinated by the "cheating" comments, etc.
This is an example of viral marketing or communication. Check out Seth Godin and lots of others.
We are in a different, bigger world. Time to adjust. I understand the challenges, being 66 years old remembering getting our first B&w TV with snow!
Way to go dad, John. Hopefully other parents will jump in & participate and/or the other students will see the opportunities and & go for it in the spirit of fun & competition.

I live in Ontario and know absolutely nothing about this school. I found out because of mass emails sent out by John Chow. This brings into question whether rules have been broken. The school should investigate adherence to the rules laid out, specifically section 11, subsection E which states that "The Contest Facilitators have the right, in their sole discretion, to maintain the integrity of the Contest, including the right to void votes, including, but not limited to, for the following reasons: inappropriate conduct in promoting votes (spam, harassment, etc.). "
They should certainly investigate whether the potentially 1000's of emails sent out, constituted spam.
Hopefully BCIT will make the right decision in its quest to maintain and promote integrity amongst its students.
If they don't at least look into it, it brings into question the true integrity of the school and may cause parents to reconsider whether they want their children to attend this insitution.

Why BCIT is Cheating said...
Posted 2 years 29 weeks ago
Someone is offering a Free iMac to vote "Why BCIT" video.
Is that FAIR to other students? These are high school students and already the father of Ashley is helping them cheat to win. What will the kids do in the future? Cheat like Madoff?
I can understand the dad and mom voting for their kids but getting strangers and bribing them with a computers to get votes is just plain wrong.
If "Why BCIT" wins, they should donate the computer to somebody else because they did not win it fair and square.
Considering the other video that is getting botes this video is more reflective of the school. Having some yellow creature being sexually assaulted is sure to align with the schools values.
Ben said...

I'm certainly not going to vote for you based on the bribe being offered. Using Ashely's dad's vast distribution list and offering a computer to those who vote for her is disgraceful. It goes contrary to what I hope this school stands for. You're buying votes, pure and simple. Too bad you couldn't try and win on merit alone. Did your team lack the confidence to compete based on quality and creativity alone? Good luck to all other entrants.
Great Job. Good luck to the crew. I trust you will win.

I suspect that those complaining about the use of Twitter for this purpose don't actually understand how Twitter works ... it goes beyond John's email list (which is opted in so not spam in the first place).

Too funny all the whiners! Bahwaaaaaaaaa!!!!! If I didn't like it, I wouldn't have voted for it. Go ahead- attack me now. No really, I can take it. The video is excellent!

Nice job selling your soul for an ibook. Ashley, may I suggest you do something for yourself and avoid riding your father's coattails in the future. Shame on you.

Dan said...

P.S. I asked to be on John's list so is not spam to me. Is a learning opportunity. thank you John.

Hi,
Fascinated by the "cheating" comments, etc.

This is no different then having your parents sell your school fundraisers to their co- workers. I can't understand why people get bent out of shape when others use the resources they have at their disposal. Besides the video is great and very well done.

Wendy Liang said...
At least you know how they're generating their votes. 3BN stated to get everyone you know to get the votes. Would you not do the same if you had the connections? Why don't you ask the entries in 2nd and 3rd place how they managed to get 424 and 366 votes?

Whole-heartedly agree with these people below me. This victory is tainted. It's fitting that the girl who tried to sell the class a calendar when she was running for class prez is in the same group as the girl riding her daddy's coattails to a win in some video contest. Karma's a bitch. Grow up.
Why BCIT is Cheating said...
